France: unemployment revised up to 9.8% and there seems to be no end in sight, the only bright spot for Chirac is that by putting the most popular politician/rival in France ,Nicolas Sarkozy as finance minister, it will dull his favorability with the public and stop giving Chirac headaches. Germany: the other economic engine of Europe is also faltering more as investor confidence drops for the 4th straight month. England: On top of all that, the EU is being rocked by Tony Blair's decision to hold a referendum on the new EU constitution, Most of the press is angry/alarmed/surprised/scared Now other Euro leaders are being pressured to hold their own votes on the constitution. Leftist Guardian blames Rupert Murdoch and the "right-wing" press, The Sun of course is gloating. United Nations: Finally the Oil for Food scandal is getting major mainstream press coverage. Russia dropped its opposition to the investigation. It will be interesting to see if this is yet another UN report that gets buried when completed like the security report from the UN Baghdad bombing.
